Course Structure
Phase one
the hand
Cultivate a relaxed and responsive relationship between the hand and the pencil through simple daily exercises that develop pressure, rhythm, direction, and movement.
Phase Two
The Eye
Develop the habit of intentional observation by slowing down, allowing relationships to emerge, and drawing what you actually see rather than what you think you know.
Phase Three
Relationship
Recognize how proportion, movement, rhythm, and relationship reveal the underlying structure that connects the parts to the whole.
Phase four
Integration
Integrate observation, movement, and structure into a natural drawing practice, developing greater confidence, clarity, and independence.
What Students Are Saying
“I think The Art of Line is a creative and intriguing way to draw, and I am very attracted to it. I like the focus on meditation and ‘feeling’ the object. The focus on the quality of the line itself is helpful and original, and helped me relate to line differently—in a more alive and attentive way.”
— Mitchell Kupferberg, United States
"A truly unique class. While learning, I couldn't help but feel that the greatest truths are the simplest. It was enlightening and deepened my understanding of observation. When seeing ordinary things on the street, I now have a new perspective and have started paying attention to the connections between them over time. It also made me reflect—amid the trivialities of daily work and life, perhaps we should set aside more time to immerse ourselves in pure lines, which is also a form of practice... As a student not particularly skilled in drawing, I felt encouraged throughout the entire session. In this era of AI, maintaining awareness and fully connecting with our inner selves, continually refining the lines on paper through observation, may be the skill we, as humans, should strive to learn the most."
— Pengyang Xu, China
"I wish I had discovered this course when I first began learning to draw. It centers on cultivating an embodied connection with my pencils, papers, and workspace. I believe this approach provides a solid foundation for developing drawing, not only as a skill but also as a meaningful form of self-expression."
— Xi Wen, Belgium
"I'm hoping to learn about plants through observation and drawing, and a friend recommended this course to me. I really enjoyed its tranquil atmosphere. When Jan described the lines as "feather-like," I suddenly discovered the life of the lines, just like the feeling I had when I wrote calligraphy when I was a child. I'm so grateful for Jan's class; her guidance has the power to bring you to the essence of nature."
— Penny Li, Belarus
